Samajwadi Party (SP) leaders assaulted a police constable in full public view at a crossing in Bijnore city on Thursday when the policeman refused to release the motorcycle of a party worker caught driving the vehicle with three pillion riders.
The constable, Deepak — who was beaten up with iron rods, leaving him critically injured — has gone on leave on Friday.
A case has been lodged at City Kotwali police station against Akhlaq alias Pappu and Mehmood Qaiser — former district presidents and secretary of SP youth wing and Majdoor Sabha, respectively — one Waseem and three unidentified persons. No arrest has been made so far.
Circle Officer (Bijnore city) Shailendra Lal said: “There was swelling on the constable’s right hand and the X-ray found a fracture on his right hand… Efforts are on to trace the accused.”
Kotwali SHO Satveer Singh said Deepak, a 2011-batch constable, is posted at the Aabkari police outpost. He added, on Thursday evening, a vehicle checking drive was on at Daak Khana crossing where a motorcycle was stopped, as four youths were riding on it.
As the youths failed to produce the registration certificate and the driving licence, the policemen seized the vehicle and asked them to get the documents.
Deepak told officials that Sub-Inspector Ata Mohammad — incharge of Tehsil police outpost who was leading the drive — while leaving the place and asked him not to hand over the motorcycle until he returns.
After the S-I left, the youths forced Deepak to hand them over the motorcycle, but he refused.
Meanwhile, the youths called up some persons who arrived there on a Scorpio. They too asked Deepak for the keys of the motorcycle, but he refused.
“When I refused to give the keys without the S-I’s permission, they slapped me. Two of them brought an iron rod from the SUV and started beating me,” said Deepak. He added that the assailants left him only after passersby rescued him. While he was attacked, someone took away the seized motorcycle. “The key of the motorcycle is still with me,” said Deepak.
Following the incident, Deepak reached the SP’s residence and informed him about the incident.
Later, on his complaint, an FIR was lodged. “I know three of the persons who attacked me and have named them in the FIR,” said Deepak.
When contacted, SP’s Bijnore district president Jameel Ansari admitted that three persons named in the FIR are party workers.
“We condemn the incident. I have written to the party high command giving full details of the incident,” said Ansari. He added that the three persons named in the FIR are not office-bearers of the party.
