Focus on education: Minister tells govt

To achieve 30 per cent gross development ratio in higher education across the country by 2020.

To achieve 30 per cent gross development ratio in higher education across the country by 2020,Union Minister of State for Human Resource Development D Purandeswari said the Uttar Pradesh government should pay attention to the education sector and join hands with the Centre to make the project a success.

Purandeswari was in Lucknow to inaugurate the central library facility of Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University.

While addressing mediapersons, she said that as of now, while the country’s gross enrollment ratio is 12.4 per cent,in Uttar Pradesh, the figure is only 7 per cent.

She added that the Centre has promised to allocate 6 per cent of the country’s GDP in the education sector. “But this is a joint responsibility of the Centre and state governments. We need to work together rather than remain in water-tight compartments,” said Purandeswari.

“The Centre has been constantly increasing its allocation for education. Unfortunately, the decline in expenditure in the education sector by states is worrying us,” she said.

Asked about the Uttar Pradesh government’s demand for more funds to implement the Right to Education Act,Purandeswari said: “We are ready to provide any support and hand holding for the state. But rather than focusing on other things, the state government should focus more on education.”
