Five cops held for custodial death

A station officer and four constables were suspended after a 60-year-old man died in the custody at Dildarnagar police station in Ghazipur district on Tuesday morning.

A station officer and four constables were suspended after a 60-year-old man died in the custody at Dildarnagar police station in Ghazipur district on Tuesday morning.

Ghazipur Superintendent of Police,Manoj Kumar said the police had arrested the deceased- Shambhu Singh Kushwaha,his son and their neighbour from Phulauna village for indulging in a brawl over a petty matter on Monday evening. The three of them were kept in the lock-up of the police station. Kushwaha complained about pain in his chest at around 3 am. His condition deteriorated by the time the Station Officer,Shyam Babu,was informed about the matter. Kumar added that doctors declared him brought dead when Kushwaha was brought to the district hospital.

Kumar told The Indian Express that the postmortem report did not reveal any injury mark on the body of the deceased. Doctors stated that Kushwaha had died of cardiac arrest.

Kumar said that a circle officer has been asked to probe into the matter and find out if the man was tortured in the police custody.

A case of murder has been registered against Shyam Babu and the constables,Kumar added.
