Five arrested after mob goes on rampage

Five people were arrested and several others were booked after they damaged public property following the death of Modaha municipal board chairman Khaleel Ahmad in Hamirpur on Saturday.

Ahmad died a day after local corporator Omprakash Sonker lodged an FIR against him under the SC/ST Act.

Alleging that Khaleel died of shock after being implicated in a case of SC/ST Act,his supporters went on rampage and torched vehicles including the jeep of the sub-divisional magistrate.

Khaleel was a B category history-sheeter and was named in over 25 cases. He died due to heart attack at his residence, said Dinesh Tripathi,Circle Officer,Hamirpur (Sadar).

The UP Congress Committee (UPCC),meanwhile,has alleged that Khaleel died in police custody.

The UPCC has constituted a four-member committee to probe the matter.
