FIR against SP MP Afzal Ansari over remark seeking legalisation of ganja
The MP allegedly claimed that millions of people openly consume ganja and that it is often used at large religious gatherings, where it is referred to as “God’s prasad” and considered a sacred herb

An FIR has been registered against Samajwadi Party’s Ghazipur MP Afzal Ansari for a controversial remark he purportedly made a few days ago advocating the legalisation of ganja (cannabis), police said. Ghazipur Circle Officer Sudhakar Pandey said they have an audio of Ansari’s statement.
The case against Ansari was registered at the Kotwali police station under Section 353 (3) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita on the complaint of Raj Kumar Shukla, a sub-inspector, who claimed to have learned of Ansari’s statement through social media, news channels, and newspapers.
The MP, elder brother of slain gangster-politician Mukhtar Ansari, allegedly claimed that millions of people openly consume ganja and that it is often used at large religious gatherings, where it is referred to as “God’s prasad” and considered a sacred herb. He also wondered if ganja is considered a sacred herb and prasad of Lord Shankar, then why is it portrayed in a distorted manner in society.
A trainload of ganja would be insufficient to meet the demand during the forthcoming Kumbh Mela and many sadhus, saints, and religious figures consume the substance, believing it has health benefits, he is learnt to have said.
He went on to question why ganja could not be legalised when bhang, another intoxicant, is licensed. Ansari’s remark sparked an outrage, especially among religious leaders and saints, who demanded action against him.
