EC to review UP poll preparation

Election Commission will hold meetings with representatives of political parties March 20.

Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath, along with election commissioners H S Brahma and Nasim Zaidi, will review Lok Sabha poll preparations of Uttar Pradesh in Lucknow March 20 and 21.

UP Chief Electoral Officer Umesh Sinha Tuesday said the commission will hold meetings with representatives of political parties March 20 and with Divisional Commissioners, District Magistrates and police officials of the range and districts March 21. The commission will also hold meetings with Chief Secretary, DGP and other officials of Home department on March 21.

Sinha said nominations for 11 LS seats in second phase of elections will begin from Wednesday. The constituencies going for polls in second phase include Nagina, Moradabad, Rampur, Sambhal, Amroha, Badaun, Aonla, Bareilly, Pilibhit, Shahjahanpur and Lakhimpur Kheri. The last date for filing nominations for these constituencies is March 26 and withdrawal is allowed till March 29 while polling will be held April 17. There are 1.8 cr voters enrolled in these constituencies.

Meanwhile, seven candidates filed nominations for six LS seats Tuesday for the first phase of elections. SP candidates Shahnawaj Rana and Shahjan Masood alias Shahdan filed nomination papers for Bijnor and Saharanpur constituencies, respectively.

BSP’s Prashant Chaudhary filed nomination for Baghpat and Mahesh Sharma of BJP filed for Gautam Buddha Nagar. Independent candidates, Aman Singh and Saida Begum filed nominations for Muzaffarnagar and Shakeel for Meerut.
