Held in the backdrop of controversies over religious conversions and “irresponsible” comments of its party leaders, the state BJP kept clear of these issues in its two-day executive meet at Deorahva Baba Ashram here.
However, senior party leaders did slip in a couple of gentle reminders to the workers to ensure that they did not utter things, which could lead to a controversy, thereby handing over another ammunition to the opposition.
Party leaders also remained categorical that BJP was only pursuing its development agenda.
National assistant organisation secretary, Shiv Prakash Singh, who has joined the party from the RSS, in his address on the concluding day, told the workers: “They (opposition) are trying to create issues out of nothing. But, we will have to ensure that, as party workers and on whatever positions we are, we do not use words or phrases in our utterances, discussions and addresses that give an unnecessary issue in the hands of the opposition.”
Earlier on Saturday, in an oblique reference to the controversies, state in-charge Om Mathur, during his address, recounted how hard the journey from the days of Jan Sangh has been. “How many and what kind of allegations were levelled against us. But we worked hard to reach this stage. Today, we have the right atmosphere and we got to keep it intact till 2017 elections,” he had said.
Mathur also reminded the party workers how Narendra Modi, despite being attacked from multiple corners and being accused of so many things, did not waver in his resolve to develop Gujarat and won three times. “Unhone kabhi kisi ko jawab nahin diya..Woh dharti par jawaab likhte the (He never replied to the allegations. He replied with his work on the ground level),” he said.
Bajpai on Sunday told The Indian Express: “It is a huge family. People may make mistakes. But using them as issues and attaching BJP with it is cheating the people. Our only stand is good governance, development and nationalism.”
National secretary, Shrikant Sharma said: “Our response to these controversies has been very clear. We are not defending the indefensible. The PM has got those making untoward statements to apologise before the Parliament. This would have not happened in previous government. Also, our development agenda is intact. The government is working hard and we will take those messages forward.”
