Doctors,ward boys return to work

One of the two destitute patients, who were taken out from Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital and dumped in Jhunsi by two ward boys on August 2,succumbed to his illness in the hospital in the early hours of Saturday.

Meanwhile, the junior doctors, who had gone on strike demanding withdrawal of the names of their colleagues from the criminal case registered in this connection, returned to work after the hospital administration managed to convince them their demand was not practical. The ward boys, who too had gone on strike questioning why the administration had taken action against only their colleague in connection with the case, have also returned to work.

According to the chief medical superintendent of SRN Hospital,Dr K G Singh, the patient Ram

Singh died around 2.30 am. “He was suffering from liver failure since the time he was admitted. His condition deteriorated in the last couple of days and he succumbed in the early hours today,” said Dr Singh. The condition of the other patient,an unidentified person aged around 23,continues to be under observation.

The junior doctors, said Dr Singh, were persuaded to understand that there was little point in continuing with their demand, which amounted to interference with the due legal process.

Hospital administration has been maintaining that while the involvement of the accused junior doctor,Sonu Sharma, whose name has been mentioned in the FIR registered in connection with the August 2 incident, was a matter of inquiry,it would have to be seen whether the arrested ward boy held any grouse against the doctor concerned.

The police said the junior doctor was not traceable yet. He had also not appeared before the hospital administration for his explanation ever since the incident came to light.

On August 2,Ram Singh and another unidentified patient were taken out from SRN Hospital and dumped in Jhunsi in a private ambulance. Two ward boys – Dharmendra Patel and Raju Yadav – and the ambulance driver,Arvind Nirmal, were arrested at the spot on the same day. Dharmendra had told the police that Dr Sharma had asked him to dump the patients in a desolate place,as they were not showing signs of improvement and were occupying beds in the ICU. The police had registered an FIR in which all four were named as accused. The two patients were brought back to SRN hospital and admitted in the ICU.

Two inquiries — one ordered by the district administration and the other being carried out by director general (medical education) Dr Saudan Singh — are on in the case and their reports are awaited.
