Doctor held for firing at BDO

The BDO escaped the bullet but was injured while grappling with the accused and his two accomplices.

A veterinary doctor posted in a Madhya Pradesh district has been arrested for allegedly opening fire at Chirgaon Block Development Officer (BDO) inside his house in Jhansi district late on Sunday evening.

The BDO escaped the bullet but was injured while grappling with the accused and his two accomplices. While the accused was said to be associated with the Samajwadi Party, the police denied it. However, they said that the wife of the accused was former block pramukh of Chirgaon.

The incident is being linked to an FIR that was registered against the accused for beating up the BDO in 2010,when he was on election duty for the Legislative Council polls. DIG (Jhansi) Anil Kumar Mishra said: “The accused,Dr Bharat Singh Yadav, has been arrested and a case of attempt to murder registered. A hunt is on for the two accomplices.”

Asked if he was an SP worker, the officer said: “He is a government servant; he can’t be associated with politics.” However,Mishra said that his wife was a former block head.

The case has been registered at Pipri Bazar police station on the basis of a complaint lodged by the BDO,S K Srivastava. So far as the 2010 case is concerned,a final report had been filed by the police that year itself, said Mishra.

In his complaint,Srivastava, who stayed in Jhansi town, said that three persons, including Yadav, entered his house around 8.30 pm on Sunday on the pretext of discussing something. “Soon a heated argument took place. The accused took a gun from his accomplice and opened fire at Srivastava,” said Circle Officer (City) Uday Shankar Singh.

“The bullet did not hit Srivastava but the accused sustained minor injury as the bullet scraped his finger before hitting a wall. The trio then grappled with the BDO and knocked him to the ground in which he sustained injuries in the leg. They then escaped.” Srivastava is in the district hospital. Singh said Srivastava worked as a veterinary officer in Tikamgarh district of Madhya Pradesh. “He did not hold any office,” said the official when asked whether he was a SP worker.
