Diggy’s CBI threat blows up on his face; BSP says will move SC

The BSP has demanded an unconditional apology by the Congress and its president Sonia Gandhi over the reported threat made by AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh to use the CBI against Chief Minister Mayawati and said it would move the Supreme Court.

The BSP has demanded an unconditional apology by the Congress and its president Sonia Gandhi over the reported threat made by AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh to use the CBI against Chief Minister Mayawati and said it would move the Supreme Court.

Addressing an election meeting in Hardoi on April 20,Singh had reportedly said that Mayawati should know CBI inquiries could be ordered if she did not stop harassment of Congress workers. An FIR was registered against Singh in Hardoi district on Tuesday under Section 188 of the IPC for violation of prohibitory orders.

BSP general secretary Satish Mishra today said Singh’s statement proved the party’s nexus with the CBI and vindicated the BSP’s charge that the central agency is being used as a political tool by the Congress. “The statement of the Congress leader was contempt of the Supreme Court. We had already pleaded before the apex court about the nexus,” said the BSP leader, adding “it’s also a confessional statement by Digvijay Singh that the Congress was using the CBI for its political ends”.

“The BSP will again go before the Supreme Court along with the transcript and the video CD of the statement of the Congress leader to prove our charges against the CBI,” Mishra said, adding “when the case of Mayawati was before the SC,how can anyone threaten us in the name of CBI”?

The BSP leader also hit out at the Election Commission, saying at a time when the poll panel is taking cognisance of even trivial issues, why it ignored such a violation of model code of conduct by the Congress leader. “Threatening a political party in the name of the CBI was a major case of violation of the model code of conduct and the EC should have taken up the issue suo motu,” he said. “This validates the charges made by BSP president Mayawati on Tuesday that the Commission was working as an ‘agent’ of the Congress,” he added.

Maya insecure,desperate: Congress

The Congress today accused Chief Minister Mayawati of over-reacting to AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh’s reported statement on CBI inquiries on Wednesday, saying it showed her desperation and insecurity.

“She (Mayawati) is over-reacting because she is feeling insecure after the response the Congress has received in public meetings held across the state,” said UPCC

president Rita Bahuguna Joshi. “The statement has been misread. Mayawati is so afraid of inquiries that she took the entire statement to herself. We will not sit quietly and soon reply in an appropriate manner,” she added. Clarifying Singh’s statement,Joshi said: “He meant that our opponents should stop harassing Congress workers. Otherwise,we will approach the CBI to probe such incidents.”

In his speech,Singh had specifically mentioned the case of Ajay Munshi, who was elected chairman of the Hardoi Nagarpalika in 2006. He was later suspended and then removed on charges of anomalies. Munshi,in his defence, said: ‘The BSP men in Hardoi are harassing me on purpose. Before the Assembly elections in 2007,they wanted me to support them, but I did not. Thus, after they came to power, they started harassing me and framed me in fake cases.” “They suspended me without even listening to what I had to say. Later,I filed a petition in the court but the government is yet to submit their reply. It’s for the first time that a senior leader like Digvijay Singh has spoken up for me,” he added.
