A B-tech student of Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) reportedly attempted suicide in her hostel room on late Monday evening. She has been admitted to IIT-Ks Institute Health Centre located inside the campus.
The institute authorities, however, denied that Snehal,a second semester student, had tried to commit suicide by cutting the veins of her left wrist. Snehal has been suffering from emotional problems and depression for the past several months. This is the fourth occasion when she has injured herself. It is not a suicide attempt it appears that she has injured herself to draw the attention of others, said Registrar Sanjeev S Kashalkar.
He added that the institute records have details of Snehals poor mental condition. Keeping that in mind, she has been advised to spend some time with her family, said Kashalkar.
Snehal has been taking medicines and attends counselling sessions for her emotional problems. The doctors have said that her condition is stable, he added.
