A Dalit labourer,Bal Karan,poisoned his four children and killing two of them before ending his life in Khutar area of Shahjahanpur district on Tuesday.
The Shahjahanpur administration ruled out poor economic condition as a possible reason behind the man taking the step.
The District Magistrate,Anil Garg,claimed that Bal Karan was upset because his wife had left the house one-and-a-half-months ago and refused to return.
After Bal Karans neighbours in Aurangabad village found him and the children lying unconscious in the house in the morning,they rushed them to the district hospital where Bal Karan,Geeta (6) and Ram Pravesh (4) were declared dead on arrival.
The other children,Sarita (12) and Keerti (10),are undergoing treatment and their condition is stated to be critical.
Sarita told the attending doctors that last night her father had given them some tablets. According to the doctors,they had consumed sulphas tablets, said Garg.
Bal Karans parents and two of his brothers,who live in adjacent Sitapur district,said he had married the girl of his choice and was staying in Shahjahanpur since his marriage, he added.
The couple had five children. Bal Karan had visited his parents last month and told that his wife had gone to her parental house taking their youngest daughter with her.
He had visited her several times,but she refused to return. Bal Karan also told his mother that he was unable to look after his small children,the DM said.
The neighbours told the administration that Bal Karan was unable to go for work and used to stay at home throughout the day to look after his children,Garg added.
He handed over Rs 5,000 and a cheque of Rs 20,000 to Bal Karans mother.
