In a video shared on a WhatsApp group of police officials and mediapersons, Kumar said crime increased during night one week before amavasya as well as the week after it. Uttar Pradesh’s officiating DGP has come up with what he calls a “scientific manner” of planning policing activity.
Claiming that incidents of crime increase during the period around amavasya (the new moon phase), officiating DGP Vijay Kumar directed police to make security preparations as per the panchang, or the Hindu calendar.
In a video shared on a WhatsApp group of police officials and mediapersons, Kumar said crime increased during night one week before amavasya as well as the week after it.
“Chandrama ke jo kalay hai, ushke aadhar par kaisi policing ki jaati hai unko chandrama ki kalay ko jaane ke liye sabse aasan tarika hai jo Hindu panchang hai, ushke hisaab se hum apne police ki gatividhiyo ko sanchalit kartey hai…aur public ke logon ko ye jaanna is liye avashayak hai jise unko pata rahe ki kis samay apradhi apni gathividhiya karit kartey hai (If policing is done as per the waning and waxing phase of the moon, then it is much easier to follow the Hindu panchang… and it is necessary for the people to know at what time criminals commit crimes),” Kumar said.
“Explaining” the movement of the moon during pooranmashi, saptami, purnima and amavasya, he claimed criminals use long dark nights during these periods to commit crimes. “Nights are dark seven days before and after amavasya… we should stay alert if we know that when the moon rises, when pooranmashi happens, when amavasya happens, when there is half-moon… if we know that, we can accordingly coordinate police activity… This is a very scientific manner…,” he said.
The 1998-batch IPS officer said that the Hindu calendar was useful for people to understand when criminals strike more and what precautions they need to take. Kumar was made officiating DGP in June.
