Three armed men robbed Rs 26.75 lakh from the Civil Lines branch of the Indian Overseas Bank in Moradabad city on Thursday. One of the robbers was,however,caught by locals while the police arrested the other two and recovered the looted cash.
The accused are Shashank Awasthi City Kotwali of Unnao,Binde alias Ram Samir Gupta of Makhi area and Prashant Shukla of Jawahar Nagar locality in City Kotwali area,said Moradabad DIG Badri Prasad Singh,adding that Awasthi is the son of Constable Shiv Shanker,who was recently transferred from the City Kotwali of Unnao.
We are interrogating the accused to find the local links that helped them execute the robbery. I have also sought the criminal antecedents,if any,of the accused from the Unnao police, the DIG said.
Around 3.30 pm,the trio stormed into the bank and held the manager,staff members and a few visitors hostage at gunpoint. The robbers looted the cash,bolted the main gates from outside and fled on a motorcycle. The bank employees,however,raised an alarm and locals chased the robbers and caught Awasthi.
The other two were held around 4.20 pm from the Moodha Pandey area bordering Rampur district.
Besides the cash,the police also recovered a country-made pistol from one of the accused,said the DIG.
