A police constable,Tula Ram (58),was found murdered in Muzaffarnagars Shahpur area Monday evening. The police recovered the body from a field bearing injuries and hunt is on to trace the accused.
Ruling out any connection with the recent communal riots,Senior Superintendent of Police,Muzaffarnagar H N Singh said the murder appears to be a fallout of some enmity or a failed robbery bid.
The constable was not in uniform when his body was recovered while his motorcycle was found some distance away.
A native of Bareilly,Tula Ram was attached with Meerapur police outpost, which falls under Shahpur police station, since 2001,and also used to stay at the outpost.
Police said Tula Ram had left the police station Monday afternoon to purchase some goods from the nearby market. Assailants, who were hiding behind the bushes, attacked him with sticks while he was on his way back, they said.
When Tula Ram fell on the road, they dragged him to a nearby field and hit him with sharp-edged weapons. He sustained head injuries. The police have recovered a stick, used in the crime, from near the body.
Station Officer Satya Pratap Singh said a local youth has claimed to have spotted four persons who are believed to have killed the constable.
