A police constable was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in his rented accommodation in Kerakat area of Jaunpur district.

A police constable was on Tuesday arrested for allegedly raping a minor girl in his rented accommodation in Kerakat area of Jaunpur district. Along with the constable, the police outpost in-charge of Thanagaddi area has also been suspended for alleged dereliction of duty.

The incident took place Monday night. However,a case was registered following agitation by locals at the police outpost on Tuesday.

The police said that Constable Shambhu Sharma, who lived in a rented accommodation in Thanagaddi area, had spotted the 11-year-old girl, who lived near his house, around 8.30 pm on Monday.

“She was returning after buying vegetables. He lured the girl on some pretext and then raped her. When the girl returned home, she narrated the incident to her father,a vegetable vendor. He went to the police outpost to lodge a complaint against the constable. However, the outpost in-charge Dinanath Mishra did not register a case,” said Superintendent of Police (City),Sripathi Mishra.

On Tuesday morning, local residents gathered at the outpost and pelted stones. They also blocked the main road for a couple of hours.

The officer added that the police post in-charge has been suspended for not registering the case immediately.

Further investigations in the case are on.

Mishra said: “The constable, who is in his early 20s,used to live in the same locality and had been posted at the outpost for the last seven months. It is not clear whether he had any interaction with the girl,or her family, prior to the incident. These things will become clear after his detailed interrogation. A case of rape has been registered and he has been arrested.”
