Congress ready to go ‘aggressive’ in UP

The Congress, which has been busy in deciding its candidates for the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, has now decided to shift its focus on conducting aggressive campaigns in the state.

The Congress, which has been busy in deciding its candidates for the 2012 Uttar Pradesh Assembly election, has now decided to shift its focus on conducting aggressive campaigns in the state.

A high-level meeting was held in this regard in Delhi today, which was attended by two AICC secretaries in-charge of state — Parvez Hashmi and Avinash Pande — along with state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi.

Sources said that the party is chalking out aggressive programmes for the coming months to be taken up in the state on issues like corruption and poor governance and at the same time fix region-wise responsibilities among the leaders. “Too much time has been given on discussion for tickets and it has been realised that the time has come to take up aggressive campaigning in the state. The time has come to fix responsibilties and make individuals accountable,” said a senior party leader.

The leader further said: “While committees to monitor the central schemes in the state has been formed, there has been no organised efforts in this direction. Soon, the party would appoint some more co-ordinators and fix their responsiblities for separate programs.”

Sources added that the party is also on a “clean-up drive” at present and has asked its frontal organisations, district and city units,to have short committees of functionaries who are ready to take up responsibilities during the election.

The reason for the concern of some leaders is that for the last two months, the party has not organised any aggressive campaign in the state, while both the BJP and the Samajwadi Party have planned yatras.

Sources said that while the party is planning to announce the second list of candidates in the next few days,it has made up its mind to exclude those seats in western Uttar Pradesh on which RLD chief Ajit Singh is demanding his share. “We are planning to exclude such seats from the second list, which might create problem in any future alliance because otherwise it would land party in a difficult situation,” said a senior party leader.
