Cong postpones two Rahul rallies in UP

Party cites ‘karwa chauth’ falling on same day

Fearing poor turnout owing to ‘karva chauth’ falling on October 22,the Congress has cancelled two rallies of party vice-president Rahul Gandhi planned on the same date in Uttar Pradesh. The rallies,in Hamirpur district of Bundelkhand and Salempur in eastern UP,were to highlight the Food Security Scheme.

“The rally is being postponed on the request of Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee because we realised that ‘karva chauth’ would fall on the same day and many workers would remain busy with their families,” said party spokesperson Dwijendra Tripathi.

He,however, did not explain why the rallies were scheduled on the date, which was already marked for the festival during which Hindu women fast for the long life of their husbands. The rallies were announced on October 2 by party general secretary Madhusudan Mistry during a function in Lucknow.

The official reason cited by the Congress has met with scepticism by even the party workers who said the rallies may have been postponed as it was scheduled just three days ahead of the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi’s show in Jhansi district of Bundelkhand on October 25.

“It seems that party is trying to avoiding any possible comparisons with Modi’s rally. It is sad but true that while BJP cadres are working day and night to ensure success of Modi’s rally,we have not yet been asked by the PPCC to mobilise the crowds for Rahul’s rally,” said a district Congress president in Bundelkhand.

A final decision on the fresh date of the rally would be taken Monday.

According to sources the decision to postpone the rally was taken after some senior party leaders, including PCC chief Nirmal Khatri, visited the area recently and realised that party was not prepared for the big rally.
