Encouraged by Banda’s district administration, which has taken on the region’s persistent droughts and paucity of rain on a war footing, Gureh’s villagers have got together to clean all the wells. Men have been hired to rappel down the stone walls to remove silt and debris, and the results are encouraging.
Linking the problem to the failure of the government to implement the Ken-Betwa river linking project, Chandel told the House that scarcity of water in the region had led to lack of fodder. Water scarcity is a perennial problem in the region.
A water-scarce region, Bundelkhand has been battling drought, debt and poverty for over a decade. In the past three years, “anna pashu (stray cattle)” has been added to the list, now building up to a serious crisis. The cattle have started endangering the Rabi crop.
“Pani ke mudde par, kendra ki shuruat ka intezar hai (We are waiting for the Centre to begin doing its part on the issue of water),” Akhilesh said, adding, “Meanwhile, we are doing everything possible using our resources.”
In a letter to the CM, Bharti said that MPs from Bundelkhand region of both UP and Madhya Pradesh had cited crises of water before the Niti Aayog, following which the central government decided to send water trains.

Mahoba, Jan 23 (ANI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday addressed a gathering in Mahoba district of the Bundelkhand region and said that the government should focus its attention to Bundelhand's drought-affected farmers. He added that the Congress would urge the Narendra Modi-led Government to take steps to uplift lives of farmers in Bundelkhand.
Mahoba, Jan 23 (ANI): Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi met villagers in Mahoba district of the Bundelkhand region in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday. Earlier in the day, Rahul held a 'padyatra' in the drought-hit region. Drought conditions and unseasonable rains have destroyed winter crops in the area. In the past few years, several farmers have committed suicide due to poor crop production in Bundelkhand. The Congress vice-president will also hold meetings with women self-help group at the Supa railway station.
