Centre okays two state projects for Agra,Meerut

The Central government has approved two new projects for the state under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission.

The Central government has approved two new projects for the state under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM).  Both the projects are for the development of the sewerage system in Agra and Meerut.

According to UP Jal Nigam officials,the Agra Sewerage Scheme project has been designed to provide sewerage facilities in two important zones including Central and Tajganj. The project aims to collect,convey and treat the sewerage and its disposal.

Officials estimate that this project will cover 19 per cent area of Agra city and it will benefit about 37 per cent population. This project will cost Rs 196 crore and Central government will share Rs 90 crore of it. About 30 per cent cost will be shared by the local body while 20 per cent will be borne by the state government.

 Another project has been approved for Meerut which is the first sewerage project under JNNURM for this city. The project,costing Rs 186 crore,will provide sewerage facility in core areas of Meerut city. Under this project,246-km sewer line will be laid,six pumping stations and a sewage treatment plant of capacity 72 MLD will be set up.  

 “As both the projects have been approved,we are going to start the tender process by this month. These projects will complete in two years,” said AK Srivastava,Managing Director,UP Jal Nigam.  

Srivastava said a sewerage project for Mathura and water supply project for Varanasi is pending in Urban Development Ministry and these are likely to be approved soon.
