Using old invites to usher in new tidings

An old invitation or greeting card could either stay with you for sheer sentimental value,or, in all probability, get trashed.

“I request everybody I know and everybody they know to give me old cards, out of which I use the paper, pictures, graphics and decorative material to make new cards,” beams Kapil Yadav, who runs successfully a business venture eponymously and aptly named ‘Kapil’s Remix’. On Tuesday,he opened an exhibition-cum-sale of his repertoire comprising cards, decorative envelopes to give gift money in and some handy carrybags shaped out of pages of past years’ calendars.

“I used to dabble with old cards to make something new and interesting and with encouragement from my mentors I came a long way,” says the young man who appeared for class XII exam this year, referring to the sister-duo Madhu Bhatia and Pratima Bhatia who have groomed him since he was a kid.

“If people throw away old cards and calendars, they end up in the river and cause pollution. If I get the stuff,it becomes raw material for my products,” says Kapil, who is executing bulk orders for wedding invites and envelopes for token money to be given to different people on different occasions during the wedding. The wares are striking more than the material used for its creative application. There are even collages with dozens of Ganpati figures, each different from the other and ones with flower cut-outs plucked from different sources. “I also take part in theatre workshops and have performed in a play staged in the National School of Drama in Delhi. But it is card making that takes much of my time,” he says.

(The exhibition is on from 11 am to 8 pm at 3 C/9,Park Road)
