The Muzaffarnagar police on Wednesday arrested Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA from Meerapur constituency Jameel Ahmed,wanted in a case of allegedly giving inflammatory speech August 30 that led to riots in the district September 7.
He was produced before the court,which sent him in judicial custody.
The Special Investigation Cell,which is investigating the cases related to the Muzaffarnagar riots,had obtained non-bailable warrant against Ahmed after he could not be traced.
Assistant Prosecuting Officer,DP Singh,said the MLA was arrested from City Kotwali area and sent to Muzaffarnagar district jail.
Nakli Singh Tyagi,Jameel Ahmeds lawyer,said they have moved a bail application in the court,which has fixed the hearing for tomorrow (October 31).
The Muzaffarnagar police had registered an FIR against 10 persons including Jameel Ahmed for reportedly giving inflammatory speech at a meeting organised at Shaheed Chowk on August 30.
Others named in the FIR included BSP MP from Muzaffarnagar Kadir Rana and another BSP MLA from Charthawal,Noor Saleem Rana.
Kadir Rana is yet to be arrested while Noor Saleem Rana is out on bail.
