A journalist of a local Hindi daily allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the third floor of a shopping mall in Gomti Nagar on Thursday. Supriya Yogi Tiwari (50),a sub-editor,was suffering from depression and had been undergoing treatment at the CSMMU,said the police. She had attempted suicide on a few occasions in the past also. “The CCTV footage confirmed that Supriya had jumped from the third floor of Fun Mall,” said Akshay Kumar,Station Officer of Gomti Nagar. Supriya,who was on a leave,had left her home saying that she was going to the mall for shopping. After she jumped,she was taken to Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital where doctors declared her dead on arrival.

Girl unhurt in honour killing attempt
Muzaffarnagar: Upset over his daughter marrying a man from another caste,a man allegedly made an abortive bid to kill her at Bakher Nagar village in the district,police said on Thursday. Nishu (25) was in love with Banti but her family was opposed to their relationship. They eloped on July 18 and later returned to the man’s house. When Vijai Pal,Nishu’s father,came to know that the couple had returned,he went to their place and opened fire on his daughter. The girl escaped unhurt. While the couple has been provided police protection,Pal is absconding,said police.

Serve summons to Dutt: Court tells cops
Barabanki: A local court directed the Mumbai police commissioner on Thursday to serve summons to actor Sanjay Dutt,who had failed to appear before it in a case related to his allegedly using derogatory remarks against Chief Minister Mayawati. Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate Arvind Mishra has fixed August 30 as the next date of hearing. Dutt had allegedly made derogatory remarks against Mayawati during a Samajwadi Party rally in Tikaitnagar area during the Lok Sabha polls last year. Dutt,the then SP general secretary,had offered a “jaadu ki jhappi” to the chief minister while commenting on her style of functioning.

Engineers suspended
Three engineers of UP Housing and Development Board (UPHDB) posted in Farrukhabad were suspended on Thursday for poor construction of houses built under the first phase of Kanshiram Shahri Gareeb Awas Yojna. Following several such complaints,the state government has directed the DMs in the state to inspect the houses and check the quality of the construction. “An executive engineer,an assistant engineer and a junior engineer have been suspended,” said Mishrilal Paswan,Secretary,UPHDB. An order has been issued to lodge an FIR against the contractor,who was awarded the contract of constructing these houses,he added.

Boy crushed to death
A two-and-a-half-year-old boy was crushed to death by a school bus in Lucknow’s Bazarkhala area on Thursday afternoon. Kishu was waiting for his elder brother,Vishu,to come home from the school when the incident took place. “Kishu was standing near the rear tyres of bus and came under them when the driver made a turn,” said Bazarkhala Station Officer Sarangdhar Dwiedi. Bus driver Yashvant Singh has been arrested.

Fund for lake upkeep
The state government has released Rs 3.72 crore for the conservation of Ramgarh Tal in Gorakhpur district. Under the National Lake Conservation Plan,the state has released its share — 30 per cent of the total amount. The Centre has also released its share of Rs 8.70 crore for the purpose.

Labourer dies
A labourer died after being trapped under the chassis of a truck in the manufacturing unit of Tata Engineering and Locomotive Company in Chinhat area on Thursday. Karunesh Shukla (24),a resident of Farrukhabad,was working as a fitter with the company. “Kamlesh was giving support to the chassis when it fell on him. He was rushed to Sahara Hospital where he succumbed,” said Chinhat SO Prithiraj Chauhan.
