Send team to assess flood damage: Govt

LUCKNOW: The state government has requested the Centre to send a team to make an assessment of the damages caused by floods in Uttar Pradesh. Chief Secretary Atul Kumar Gupta has written to the Union Home Ministry in this regard on Tuesday. The government has urged the Centre to provide it Rs 2,351 crore for relief operations in flood-hit areas,besides restoration of facilities like roads,bridges and embankment. Earlier,Chief Minister Mayawati had written to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh demanding financial assistance of Rs 2,000 crore on September 22.

HC asks for report on cases against lawyers

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Bench of the Allahabad High Court on Tuesday directed the Lucknow district administration,the police and the Intelligence Bureau to prepare a detailed report on lawyers against whom criminal cases are pending and submit it by October 25. The court passed the order on a complaint filed by a local lawyer,Prashant Singh Gaur,which it had converted into a writ petition. Gaur had alleged some lawyers practicing in the civil court had manhandled him in order to prevent him from appearing in a case on September 22. The Bench comprising Justices Uma Nath Singh and V K Dixit also directed the CBI to keep a watch on the activities of such lawyers. It has issued notices to the Bar Council of India and to the Bar Council of Uttar Pradesh to file their responses to the complaint.

The district committees,whose presidents have been announced,are Pilibhit,Mathura,Deoria,Etah,Mainpuri,Firozabad,Chitrakoot,Gorakhpur,Chandauli,Siddharth Nagar,Basti,Banda,Lucknow,Allahabad,Faizabad,Kushinagar,Mahoba,Jhansi and Mau. Congress MLA from Lucknow (West) has been elected the president of the city Congress committee in Lucknow.

LUCKNOW: Uttarakhand Chief Minister Ramesh Pokhariyal Nishank will be on a day-long visit to Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday. Nishank will attend a function to mark the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya in Mathura,where BJP national president Nitin Gadkari and state party president Surya Pratap Shahi will also be present.
