‘Brahmin sammelan shows SP has deviated from path shown by Lohia’

He said even other senior leaders like Chaudhary Charan Singh, whom the SP claimed to be following, were against this system and thus this act of the SP was unpardonable.

Union Steel Minister Beni Prasad Verma on Tuesday criticised the Samajwadi Party for holding a Brahmin sammelan on the occasion of Parashuram Jayanti, saying the party which called itself “followers of Ram Manohar Lohia” had lost direction and deviated from the path shown by the socialist veteran.

“Lohia was always against dividing people in the name of caste. He used to raise slogan ‘Jati toro, samaj joro’,” said Verma. He added: “However, for attracting votes, the SP went to the extent of cheating people by teaching youngsters and students lessons of casteism through Brahmin sammelan.”

He said even other senior leaders like Chaudhary Charan Singh, whom the SP claimed to be following, were against this system and thus this act of the SP was “unpardonable”.

Verma further said that a party which deviates easily from its basic principles and values can never be trusted to bring about changes in the society or good governance. But the Samajwadi Party has been cheating public by supporting communal sentiments for ages,Verma added.

“They can say that I speak without sense but I speak with facts. One can find out how the SP strategically supported Muslim candidates in the Gujarat election after the Godhra incident. Then,in a recent example, the state government helped Varun Gandhi in getting clean chit in cases of making communal speeches,” Verma alleged.

On the issue of similar sammelans being organised by the Bahujan Samaj Party,Verma said the BSP can be forgiven because it had no pretensions, but the SP swears by the name of Lohia, who was against the system of caste.
