The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has once again postponed the release of its first list of candidates for the 2012 Assembly polls in Uttar Pradesh.
Sources said the party will now release the first list for about 150 seats after the completion of the three yatras to be taken out separately by three senior leaders Lal Krishna Advani,Rajnath Singh and Kalraj Mishra.
The party had earlier said the first list would be released during Navaratra, which begins by the end of this month.
Advanis rath yatra against corruption is likely to start on October 11 and end on November 20 after covering different states, including UP. Sources said details of his yatra would be released on September 24.
The two-phase jan swabhiman yatra to be taken out by Rajnath and Kalraj will start on October 13 from different places.
BJP national vice-president Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi confirmed the party may announce the first list after the yatras. The party needs more time to select the best candidates with a clean image, Naqvi said.
But sources said the party postponed the list for two reasons. First,if the list is released earlier, those denied tickets may not work with the same enthusiasm for the success of the yatras.
Second, the yatra will provide an opportunity to assess the popularity of the aspirants.
Rajnath will start the first phase of his yatra from Deendayal Dham in Mathura and end it in Kheri on October 22. He will start the second phase from Bahraich on November 13 and end it in Lucknow on November 21. His yatra will travel 2,520 km in 19 days.
Kalraj Mishra will start his yatra from Bharat Mata Mandir in Varanasi and end it in Jalaun on October 22. He will start the second phase from Hamirpur on November 13 and end it in Lucknow on November 21. He will also travel 2,520 km in 19 days.
During their yatras, both the leaders will cover 334 Assembly constituencies. These seats include 31 constituencies where the sitting MLAs are from the BJP.
The main focus of the yatra will be on around 282 seats where the party is expecting an increase of votes for the BJP in the next Assembly elections. Leaders will address maximum public meetings in these constituencies, said a senior party leader.
The party has constituted a 10-member committee of senior party leaders for the final screening of the first list before sending it to the partys Central Parliamentary Board.
The committee has senior leaders such as Rajnath Singh,Kalraj Mishra,Vinay Katiyar,Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi,Surya Pratap Shahi,Narendra Singh Tomer,Sanjay Joshi and Uma Bharti.
