The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) will start the process of selection of candidates for Lok Sabha elections in September from Uttar Pradesh where the Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party have already taken a lead by declaring their candidates of most seats.
BJP UP unit had received names of probable candidates from all 80 Lok Sabha constituencies as early as May with the state election committee also taking an overview of these names.
The party had plans to announce the candidates earlier so that it gets enough time to work in respective constituencies.
The state unit had sent 23 teams of observers to all constituencies to collect feedbacks about probable candidates.
The process, however, got stuck with the party cadre getting busy with constituting booth-level committees.
Sources said partys state leaders will first hold meetings with district presidents to discuss the names received from their respective constituencies. After making a panel of names for each constituency, the lists would be tabled before the state election committee headed by partys state unit president Laxmikant Bajpai. The committee will shortlist the candidates and send the list to central election committee headed by national president Rajnath Singh.
BJP national secretary and UP co-incharge Rameshwer Chaurasiya told The Indian Express: Meetings regarding selection of candidates would start after September 15. The party will declare the LS candidates first in UP as SP and BSP have declared their candidates.
Chaurasiya said the party may start declaring candidates in UP from November in a phased manner.
