BJP forms teams to review LS defeat

Over a month after the LS poll debacle, the Bharatiya Janata Party has formed teams of senior leaders who will survey different states in weeks to come.

Over a month after the LS poll debacle, the Bharatiya Janata Party has formed teams of senior leaders who will survey different states in weeks to come.

Sources in the party’s central office said a team of four senior leaders, including the spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad, has been constituted for UP and is expected to visit Lucknow shortly.

Following the national executive committee meet, president Rajnath Singh has formed such teams for all states. During the visits, these leaders will meet party candidates for the Lok Sabha elections, take a look at the party organisation and suggest changes wherever needed.

Talking to The Indian Express, Prasad said: “There is a strong need for introspection after the LS defeat. This exercise is being done for all states.”

Sources said the teams will talk to the loser candidates who have complained of internal bickering as a primary reason of the defeat. “Most of the candidates in Uttar Pradesh complained of this and the party believes the issue needs to be addressed urgently,” said a senior party leader.

In UP, the exercise may see a number of skeletons tumbling out from BJP’s closets. Said an office bearer: “There are many contentious issues like the distribution of tickets and the flaws in managing the elections. This exercise will bring these issues at the national level.”

At the national executive meet held last week,it was decided that the party will immediately start the work of strengthening its base in the states. It was also decided that the states facing Assembly elections within the next three years will get greater attention. UP will go to elections in 2012.
