Banaras Hindu University is planning to open new academic centres in Rae Bareli and Amravati,Maharashtra.
The university has sent a proposal to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to start a new institute for womens education in Congress president Sonia Gandhis constituency Rae Bareli. The varsity administration is also mulling over establishing another campus in Maharashtra, where it has land available. The south campus of the university in Mirzapur is also being proposed for development as a full-fledged rural university.
For Rae Bareli, the university has been working on a proposal to establish a new campus of the womens college. The university already has a womens college in Varanasi. We have sent a detailed proposal for establishing the womens college and asked for 300 acre land, said Prof Lalji Singh,vice-chancellor.
However,in order to open a branch of the BHU Womens College in Rae Bareli, the Varanasi Womens college itself needs to be given the status of an institute rather than a college. We have sent in a proposal to the MHRD for converting the BHU womens college into an institute, said Prof Rajesh Singh, head of information and public relation, and spokesperson of the university.
Under the proposal, the womens college, which as of now runs as an affiliated college of BHU in Varanasi, with a principal at the helm of affairs, would now be converted into an institute, with a director as its head. The institute will have different departments.
In another project,BHU is also planning to establish a second campus in Amravati,Maharashtra. The proposal came from the Mumbai chapter of BHU alumni association in March 2013. The Maharashtra government has given 200 acre land for the new campus. We plan to establish an institute of agriculture on the campus. However,we still have to get the approval from our academic and executive council for the campus, said the V-C.
In the third project, the varsity has sent a proposal to MHRD for declaring its south campus at Barkachha in Mirzapur, called Rajiv Gandhi South Campus, into a full-fledged rural university under BHU.
