Badminton: SAI Lucknow win girls team c’ship title

The team of SAI Lucknow (UP) beat SAI Dhar team 2-1 in the finals to bag the girls team championship title in the Sports Authority of India All India Inter Region Badminton Tournament which commenced at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow on Tuesday.

The team of SAI Lucknow (UP) beat SAI Dhar team 2-1 in the finals to bag the girls team championship title in the Sports Authority of India (SAI) All India Inter Region Badminton Tournament which commenced at the KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow on Tuesday. On Wednesday,the matches will start from 8.30 am onwards.

The Results: Girls Team Championship:-1st semi-final: SAI Dhar (MP) beat NE Region (Guwahati) 3-0 ( 1st Singles: Khushboo (CC,Dhar) beat Kangana Kumari 21-12,21-19; 1st Doubles: Khushboo & Kirti (CC,Dhar) beat Kangana Kumari & Apoorva Bora (NE Region,Guwahati) 13-21,21-13,21-15; 2nd semi-final: SAI,Lucknow (UP) beat Chandigarh team 2-0 ( 1st Singles: Kanwaljit Kaur (UP) beat Nisha (Chandigarh) 21-19,21-18; 1st Doubles: Saruni Sharma & Kanwaljit (UP) beat Nisha & Astha (Chandigarh): 21-6,21-15); Final: SAI,Lucknow (UP) beat SAI Dhar 2-1 ( 1st Singles: Kanwaljit Kaur (UP) lost to Khushboo Patel (Dhar) 20-22,21-9,19-21; 1st Doubles: Kanwaljit Kaur & Saruni Sharma (UP) beat Khushboo & Kirti (Dhar) 22-20,21-13; 2nd Singles: Tapaswani (UP) beat Kirti (Dhar) 21-12,21-16).

Laxman awards

The highest state sports awards — the Laxman/ Rani Laxmi Bai awards,will be given to players for the year 2008-’09 and 2009-’10 at 1.00 pm on September 9 at KD Singh ‘Babu’ Stadium,Lucknow. Regional Sports Officer,Lucknow RP Singh informs that those who would be honoured for 2008-09 include Amit Chaudhary (body-building),Vivek Mishra (gymnastics),Ratish Kumar Pandey (handball),Jasmer (kabaddi) and Sukanya Mishra (athletics). Taekwondoist Srishti Singh would be honoured for the year 2009-2010.Last year,the sports department had announced Laxman and Rani Laxmi Bai awards would be given away to these players on National Sports Day (August 29) in 2010 itself but the awards were not given on the scheduled date.

Gaurav,Vishal excel

UP judokas bagged 2 golds,1 silver and 2 bronze at the end of day-one in the ongoing Sub-Junior National Judo Championships being held in Kerala. Gaurav Awasthi of Hardoi,currently practising at SAI,Lucknow,won a gold medal after defeating Satish from Haryana in below 45 kg weight catogery. Vishal Chauhan of Saharanpur bagged gold medal in the 55 kg weight catogery after defeating M Herijit from Manipur. Sudhir Kumar of Saharanpur claimed a silver medal in the above 45 kg weight catogery. Jitendra Patel of Varanasi and Bharti of Ghaziabad won a bronze each.
