Mohammed Azam Khan, the Samajwadi Party leader sulking over his party’s friendship with Kalyan Singh, has served a week’s ultimatum to his party chief Mulayam Singh Yadav to retract his statement giving clean chit to the former BJP leader in the demolition of Babri  mosque.

“Yadav is requested to stop rubbing salt on the wounds of Muslims and admit that absolving Kalyan Singh in Babri demolition case was a mistake,” said Azam Khan, adding that “with this a message will go to the Muslims that the SP remains committed to their cause”.

“Muslims can never tolerate a clean chit to Kalyan Singh, who has also been convicted by the Supreme Court,” said Khan.

The leader, who raised revolt against the party leadership after Singh joined hands with the SP,held a meeting of Muslim clerics at his residence on Monday, after which the ultimatum was issued in a press release.

The clerics said Muslims were aggrieved after Yadav embraced Singh,a mascot of the BJP in the Babri demolition.

“The SP was the real party for all the Muslims of the country but this act of Yadav had created doubt among us about his creditability to fight for the community,” they said.

Asking the SP chief to clarify his stand within a week on his statement that Singh was innocent in the Babri demolition,Khan said Muslims have been neglected by all parties and now the SP was doing the same.
