Assets case: Maya counters CBI charges

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday submitted documents before the SC,countering CBI’s allegations that there was “ample evidence” to prosecute her in a disproportionate assets case.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati on Friday submitted documents before the SC,countering CBI’s allegations that there was “ample evidence” to prosecute her in a disproportionate assets case.

Mayawati’s lawyers said the documents would “vindicate” her allegation that CBI was dragging the case for “political vendetta”.

“We have placed documents which pertain to the CBI probe into the case, the clean chit given to her by the Income Tax Tribunal, records from Parliament and statements made by rival politicians against her,” Additional Advocate General of UP Shail Kumar Dwivedi said.

During the brief hearing,Attorney General G E Vahanvati said he would file objections to Mayawati’s delayed rejoinder affidavit.

In her affidavit,Mayawati has alleged CBI was using different yardsticks for opposition politicians. She cited the case of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav for whom “CBI had not preferred an appeal against his acquittal in a disproportionate asset case when he was in the previous government”.

“You cannot have different yardsticks for different politicians, particularly those in the opposition,” she said in the affidavit.
