A vegetable vendor died in Uttar Pradesh’s Bareilly on Thursday after municipal workers dumped sludge on him while he was asleep under a tree, police said.
Police said they have filed a case of causing death by negligence against the municipal corporation’s contractor, Nayim Shastri.
“The municipal corporation employees dumped a trolley full of sludge on Sunil Kumar even without noticing him,” said Dhananjay Pandey, the Station House Officer of Baradari Police Station in Bareilly.
The tractors and trolleys made multiple rounds. Police are trying to identify the driver and the helper present when the sludge was dumped on the man, said Pandey.
“There were so many tractors and trolleys dumping the sludge, we are yet to identify the exact one. We will take action once we identify the employees involved,” the SHO told The Indian Express.
Pandey said that the drains are being cleaned across Bareilly and the removed sludge is being dumped outside the city in trolleys.
Kumar’s father, Girwar Singh Prajapati, said in his police complaint that his son was sleeping in the shade of a tree near a graveyard.
“After some time, the family members of my son started looking for him and they found out that an employee of the municipal corporation, its contractor, Nayim Shastri dumped the sludge on him that was loaded on the trolley of the tractor,” he said in the complaint.
“My son was buried under the sludge despite the fact that there was no provision for dumping any garbage or sludge there,” Prajapati said. Kumar was later taken to Hazrat Hospital where he was declared dead, he said.
“My son lost his life because of the callousness of the municipal corporation,” Kumar’s father told police.
