The spate of kidnapping in Kanpur does not seem to abate. On Friday afternoon,20-year-old Akhilesh Pratap Singh,a student of BTech, was allegedly kidnapped from outside the institutes premises.
While Akhileshs family has registered a case against unidentified kidnappers at Sachendi police station on Sunday, police believe that the youth has not been kidnapped but has deliberately run away.
Hargovind Singh, father of Akhilesh, told mediapersons: We have contacted all our relatives, friends and neighbours but none of them have any information about my son. He denied receiving any ransom call from the kidnappers.
Refuting the police theory,Singh said: If Akhilesh has run away,at least he would have contacted someone in the family or his friends. Instead for the last two days his mobile phone is switched off. Denying any personal or profession rivalry,he claimed that ransom appeared to be the lone cause behind the alleged kidnapping.
A resident of Shivpuri Colony,Akhilesh is a second-year student of civil engineering at PSAT Institute.
According to the familys driver, who used to drop him at the institutes gate every morning and pick him up in the afternoon,he was shocked to know from the institute authorities that Akhilesh had not attended his classes on Friday.
The police, meanwhile, claimed that there are several reasons which make them believe that the youth has not been kidnapped.
According to ASP (Crime) O P Singh,Akhilesh had failed to clear two exams in the first year. He was under pressure of clearing the back paper, he said.
It has been more than 48 hours since Akhilesh has been allegedly kidnapped but it is surprising that the kidnappers have not contacted the family members for ransom, he added.
