Aligarh Muslim Universitys Vice-Chancellor Tuesday received injuries after being hit by a car, which, the university spokesperson claimed, was a deliberate attempt to harm him. Lt Gen (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah was on his way to the office on a bicycle when a red Alto hit him, said AMU spokesperson Rahat Abrar, adding the car driver deliberately tried to push the V-C to the extreme end of the road in front of the university guest house number 2. The V-C recently started using bicycle to commute within the campus as a drive to popularise cycling following the ban on motorcycles at all boys hostels in the university. Shah was rushed to J N Medical College Hospital where the doctors said he has fractured his fourth and fifth ribs while the knee of the left leg has been badly bruised. The V-Cs gunner,Irfanuddin, who was on another bicycle behind him, lodged an FIR with the Civil Lines police station. Police have arrested a youth named Islam alias Sonu,a student who has come from Debai for his sisters treatment at a hospital near the AMU campus,Circle Officer Sansar Singh said. Sonu has told AMU proctorial board members that it was an accident and he did not hit the V-C deliberately, Singh added.
