(File Image)The Uttar Pradesh Police Monday booked two students and the provost of the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) over a recent beef biryani notice.
Those named in the FIR have been identified as Mohammed Faizzullah and Mujjaism Ahmad Bhati, and provost Fasih Raghiv Gauhar.
The notice claimed that beef biryani would be served for lunch at the hostel on Sunday instead of the usual chicken biryani.
After a protest from a section of students, the AMU administration, though, clarified there was a typing error and that chicken biryani would not be discontinued.
“The matter had come to our notice Sunday morning. It contained a typing error. The notice had no official signatures and was immediately withdrawn and a show cause notice was issued to those who were authorised to put up posters at the AMU,” said Wasim Ahmed, Proctor, AMU.
The FIR has been lodged at the Civil Lines police station under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 302 (uttering words with deliberate intent to hurt religious feelings), 270 (public nuisance) and 353 (public mischief).
“The FIR has been lodged and we are investigating the charges in the complaint. A definite legal action will be taken against those found guilty. The notice has hurt the sentiments of a large section of students,” said Dinesh Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO), Civil Lines police station.
Meanwhile, the Karni Sena has also expressed resentment over the biryani controversy and submitted a memorandum on the matter to Abhay Pandey, Deputy Superintendent of Police, Civil Lines.
