Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) vice-chancellor Lt. Gen. (Retd) Zameer Uddin Shah has expelled students union president Shahzad Alam,a PhD scholar, with immediate effect from the rolls of the university on charges of gross misuse of students union funds and creating unruly scenes during a university function attended by Union Minister of State for HRD Jitin Prasada.
The university administration took the decision on the recommendations of its discipline committee that levelled over a dozen charges on the student leader who was doing research on women issues in media.
University spokesperson Rahat Abrar said Shahzad was found to have lavishly spent from the students funds as he withdrew Rs 14.90 lakh as an advance and spent a huge sum improperly within two months of his tenure.
The expulsion order said that in just two months,he spent Rs 77,800 on tea and snacks and Rs 74,130 on photostat under his authority and orders. He also spent Rs 33,350 on account of travel. He took multiple advances of funds but failed to produce convincing and reasonable account of the same. The order said that no assets, except one printer costing Rs 6,000 has been created out of the funds given to him.
The other charges against him include misbehaving with Aligarh district administration during an exhibition on February 4,creating unruly scenes at Kennedy auditorium during a programme attended by Union Minister Jitin Prasada on April 6,leading a protest outside proctor office on March 23 and staging a demonstration on campus on May 17.
He had been suspended on April 6,a few hours after he allegedly created nuisance before Jitin Prasada.
Shahzad has been debarred from seeking admission in AMU for the next five academic sessions from 2013-14 onwards and the university has been placed out of bound for him for the above five years period, Abrar said. Shahzad denied the charges of misuse of student union funds and said that he was expelled only because he had tried to raise the demand of minority status for AMU before Jitin Prasada. The Vice-Chancellor is trying to suppress the voices that are being raised in support of demand for minority status of AMU, he said.
