A woman allegedly strangled her two minor daughters before attempting to die by suicide following a fight with her husband in Uttar Pradesh’s Amroha on Monday.

The police said Sonia Singh, 29, has been admitted to a hospital where her condition is said to be critical.

According to officers, Sonia is believed to have strangled her daughters Anushka, 7, and Kitto, 3, after a dispute with her husband Kopin Singh late on Sunday night. Kopin, who works at an industrial unit in Gurgaon, had come to their village in Bahadurpur Khurd on Saturday.

Kopin’s elder brother, his wife and their children also live in the same house.

Sunil Kumar, Station House Officer (SHO) of Naugawan Sadat police station, said Sonia did not send her daughters to school on Monday. “She waited for her husband and his elder brother to go out for work and killed her minor daughters. She also tried to kill herself,” he said.

“Her sister-in-law Sonam, 32, who also happens to be her sister, first saw the girls’ bodies on the bed when she entered Sonia’s room on Monday afternoon. She told us that Sonia was lying unconscious in a pool of blood outside the kitchen,” the SHO added. The woman was then rushed to the hospital.

In the evening, Kopin lodged a First Information Report (FIR) claiming that his wife killed their daughters.

Rajiv Kumar Singh, Additional Superintendent of Police (ASP), Amroha, said inquiries indicated that Kopin’s financial situation was not as good as that of his two brothers. “One brother lives in Ghaziabad. We were told that the poor financial situation had led to strained relations with his wife. We have registered a case under section 101 (murder) of the Bhartiya Nyaya Sanhita,” he said.

“We haven’t been able to record Sonia’s statement as she is not in a condition to talk,” the ASP stated.
