The state government has suspended Ambedkar Nagar SP Devi Prasad Srivastava for laxity in handling a situation in Jahangeerganj locality yesterday, when around half a dozen makeshift shops were set ablaze by a mob protesting against alleged cow slaughter.
The situation was controlled after a heavy police force rushed there and dispersed the mob.
Srivastava was replaced by Sunil Kumar Saxena, who was SP (Intelligence) in Kanpur.
The police said on Saturday morning, some people saw a cow being slaughtered at an isolated place under Jahangeerganj police circle. They raised an alarm, following which those who were slaughtering the animal ran away. Later,a crowd, consisting mostly of Hindu Yuva Vahini, gathered at Giriya Bazar and staged a protest. The situation soon took an ugly turn when they indulged in arson.
Jahangeerganj station officer RP Singh said 10 persons had been arrested. Two have been arrested on charges of cow slaughter and eight others for arson, said the SO.
In March, rioting and arson took place in Tanda town of Ambedkar Nagar district after the murder of Hindu Yuva Vahini leader Ram Babu Gupta. The town was placed under curfew.
