Ageless Art

Retired professor chronicles state of fine arts in UP after Independence

Exhaustive best describes Variegated Vista, the book authored by Shefali Bhatnagar, former assistant professor at the Arts College in Aligarh, affilliated to the Agra University. The book studies the travails of painting, sculpture and printmaking in post-Independence Uttar Pradesh.

At a ripe age,Bhatnagar scaled the length and breadth of the state over 10 years to explore what is keeping the fine arts alive here,if at all.

“It is almost static…there is neither decline nor any development,” she observes,at the release of her book at Universal Booksellers ,Lucknow. In the absence of aid, government or non-government,the arts have struggled to survive,” says the author whose book has interviews with artists, sculptors and artisans and 500 pictures mostly taken by herself.

“Family has been a major support in my project,” said Bhatnagar,an artist in her own right, whose paintings have been exhibited widely.

“I hope my book will bring areas that need attention to the notice of authorities and organisations dedicated to the cause of art forms and their uplift,” she said, aspiring to come out with one more book on the subject of art.
