After SC rap,state fast-tracks high-security number plates

The state transport department has been made the nodal agency for the project and it would undertake the entire tender process. The bid document has already been prepared and sources in the department said the selected developer would have to take up the responsibility of establishing the infrastructure,maintaining as well as operating it at his own risk across the state.

The department is planning to give space to the developers in regional transport offices across the state but as the interested private players have expressed the need for at least half acre of land to develop the necessary infrastructure,the government is planning to identify alternative sites as well.

The high-security number plates,which are long overdue in the state,would aim at preventing “counterfeiting and duplication” of registration plates especially after theft. Since,these plates would be sensitive and would have to be made on the guidelines issued by the Government of India,only government of India-approved can bid for the same.

“We have to submit the action taken report to the court before first week of July. We hope by then,UP would make considerable progress in implementation process of high-security registration plates,which are to be put even on the vehicles registered in the past,” said a senior official of the Transport department.
