Police resorted to cane-charge and firing after a mob of over 300 locals attacked Birno police station in Ghazipur district and torched three vehicles including the police jeep on Saturday. A youth suffered bullet injury in the police firing and about 23 policemen including station officers (SOs) of three police stations and three of the locals suffered critical injuries in the clash between the police and the people.
Ghazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Manoj Kumar told The Sunday Express that this mornings incident was sequel to the death of Dharmendra Bind whose body was found hanging from the ceiling of a classroom of a private school at Gurya Para village in Birno police station area late on Friday evening. Bind was running the primary school in the name of Urban Public School in five semi-constructed rooms in the village.
The family members did not inform the police about Binds death and the locals staged a blockade placing the body outside the local police station around 9 am on Saturday. The people alleged the man was murdered and demanded arrest of the accused and compensation to the kin of the deceased,the SP said. He also said the police officials were trying to pacify the mob when they started brick-batting and barged into the police station damaging the boundary walls from three sides. The locals ransacked the SOs room,the office and damaged the property. A group of the locals set afire SOs jeep and a Bolero and Scorpio parked on the premises.
The SP added that the police force initially cane-charged and later fired in the air to control the violent mob. A youth has suffered gunshot injury in the firing,Kumar confirmed.
The injured was identified as Ishtiyaq. The policemen and three of the locals had suffered injuries in the brick-batting and they also were admitted at the hospital.
The SP said that they have registered a case of murder on the complaint of Binds kin and another case is registered into the violence and arson by the mob. He,however,said that the postmortem examination of the body of the deceased has confirmed asphyxia due to ante-mortem hanging as the cause behind the death which indicated towards the suicide. But,the investigation will be conducted in the case to corroborate the cause of death,the SP added.
