A week after releasing its first list of 73 candidates for Assembly elections in the state,Congress found it difficult to to come to any conclusion in the screening committee meeting that took place in Delhi on Monday to discuss the second list of candidates.
Earlier, the party had planned to release the second list of about 100 candidates by August 31 or first week of September. Sources said now the party has decided not to hurry with the second list. The next screening committee meeting is expected to take place in the second week of September. After which, the central election committee would finalise the partys second list.
There was hardly any discussion on specific seats. Since in the second list,we will have to consider seat sharing with smaller parties, the main discussion revolved around that only. As Digvijaya Singh has come back to Delhi only yesterday, now third round of talks with RLD party would also take place, informed a senior party leader, who was part of the meeting.
The meeting was headed by chairman of the screening committee Mohan Prakash and was attended by AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh, state president Rita Bahuguna Joshi and Congress legislature party leader Pramod Tiwari. Those present in the meeting said the discussion was on seat sharing with Rashtriya Lok Dal and other small parties.
There are total about eight seats, where both of us want to field our candidates in western UP. While we think we have strong candidates for these seats who can win,RLD wants these seats in its share. We have already announced candidates on some of these seats in the first list and where no compromise could be made. Next round of talks with RLD would make things clear, said a senior party leader.
When asked about the meeting,Mohan Prakash said,There are no conclusions as of now. In screening committee meeting,we are expected to discuss names but the final authority is with the central election committee, which did not meet today.
