As the All India Congress Committee (AICC) observers arrive in the state to interview aspiring candidates for 2012 Assembly polls, the state Congress is busy making it clear that their word is not final.

As these observers have indicated that they will conduct an independent survey, regional leaders fear that they may not have a say in the selection of candidates.

The UPCC is now making it clear that it will prepare its own list. And before drawing up the final list, the AICC will consider both lists and may even go for a third party survey.

The situation used to be different in previous elections,as candidates were selected at the last moment, said state Congress president Rita Bahuguna Joshi. Some of the probable candidates were even reluctant to contest elections.

“But this time, there is huge list and thus, the job becomes difficult to choose a winning candidate,” she said. “While observers are doing their work, the UPCC will prepare its own list and the AICC at a later stage, may have a third party survey. The idea is to select the most suitable candidate.”

Asked when the final list will be ready, she said there is enough time. “We have our units in place and have seen people work for the party in the past,so it should not take much time,” she said.

The first visit of the observers took place last week in Allahabad.

Around 16 June, another party observer,Muzaffar Hussain, will visit areas in eastern Uttar Pradesh — the route of Yatra number 6.

As for the UPCC and other lists,Joshi said: “These are not parallel activities but an integrated one.”
