Every year’s topper of the medical university is decorated with the Hewett Award,Lt General Sir John Prescott Hewett,who was the Governor of United Provinces at the time of the university’s inauguration.

In honour of the visit of King George V and Queen Mary to India,it was called King George Medical College and was affiliated to the Allahabad University.

According to the KGMU Act 2002,which is the original Act of the varsity,the name King George was replaced by Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj and that is how it got its present name.

For a medical university with a proud past,the landmarks comprise being selected by the Rockefeller Foundation for a Residency Training Programme to be set up here,which is running successfully.

In the 1980’s the college was selected as a site for establishment of a Clinical Epidemiology Unit by the International Clinical Epidemiology Network. In 1991,the Unit was formally inaugurated and since has been upgraded as the KGMC Institute of Clinical Epidemiology (KGMCICE).

Glorious Name
A good name many pass-outs of the university,as well as those who have been associated with it by the virtue of holding a post here have received the nation’s highest awards.
