Umpada Bauri’s life has changed in a matter of months. The 28-year-old Youth Congress representative has been elected MLA from Para Assembly segment in Purulia.
Life has changed significantly and I want to thank Rahul Gandhi for that, said the son of a Group IV PWD employee and schoolteacher.
Soumitra Khan, another Youth Congress candidate from Katulpur, was all praises for the organisation and Rahul’s leadership. He described how state Youth Congress president Mausam Benazir Noor and former president Amitava Chakraborty helped him in his campaign. No one believed I could win from Katulpur Assembly segment but people had faith in me, said the 31-year-old who won by 1,400 votes.
Khan thanked Rahul’s initiative, which helped young candidates like him get tickets to contest elections. Both Katulpur in Bankura and Para in Purulia were said to be seats with strong Left support, but the young candidates managed to turn the tide.
Another Youth Congress candidate,Protima Rajak contesting from Barwan Assembly segment in Murshidabad, won by 616 votes. Protima,31,an ICDS worker, had a brief stint in politics as a zilla parishad member of Behrampore.
The Youth Congress candidate who faced the biggest challenge is Sabina Yeasmin, the Malda zilla parishad sabhapati from the newly carved Mothabari Assembly segment in Malda. Yeasmin,Youth Congress president of Malda South Parliament constituency, was pitted in a triangular fight and won by 6,099 votes.
