Writer ‘too qualified’,blind student misses HS exam

A visually challenged student of Louis Braille Memorial School for the Sightless in Hooghly was unable to sit for her Higher Secondary examination today because her writer was reportedly overqualified.

A visually challenged student of Louis Braille Memorial School for the Sightless in Hooghly was unable to sit for her Higher Secondary (Class XII) examination today because her writer was reportedly overqualified.

Munni Sarker’s writer Ria Naskar has just given her Class XI examination.

The principal of Munni’s school,Pankaj Kumar Das,said,“Munni is an orphan. She is a sincere student. We tried hard to find a writer for her. Only Ria turned up and, that too, yesterday.”

The higher education department, however, rejected her papers as she was ‘overqualified’. Munni, therefore, missed her English examination.

Das said: “I tried to contact the Chief Minister’s Office and spoke to the private secretary of the school education ministry, who promised to look into the matter. This morning,I called up Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya, but they told me to send a writer who is in the seventh or eighth class. This is completely against the Right to Education principle, which promises education to everyone.”

An official at the Rabindra Mukta Vidyalaya said,“Our greatest sympathies are with Munni, but there are certain rules. If we had made an exception for her, then we would have to make an exception for everyone. Munni’s writer had just passed 11th,she was definitely over-qualified to write on Munni’s behalf.”
