The proposed renovation of the historic Writers Building will be handled with care and the state government assured Saturday they will not appoint a foreign agency to renovate the 236-year-old heritage building.
However,changes that may have eroded the heritage character may have to be reversed. This will depend on the recommendation of experts. The government has asked for a report from a team of experts from Jadavpur University, Sanjay Mitra,chief secretary said.
Meanwhile,a team from Jadavpur University has already collected the sample of materials used for the building .
All statutory bodies relevant to the heritage issue will be consulted and their inputs will be taken, he said,adding that all efforts are being made to make Writers environmental friendly. The government is yet to get an estimate of the cost that will be incurred in the renovation process,Mitra said,adding the files of service records and pension papers will not be shifted to the new complex in HRBC Building in Howrah.
