Two more CPM supporters killed in Jhargram

Bullet-ridden bodies of two CPM supporters were found on the state highway near Garh-Salboni in Jhargram on Saturday morning.

Bullet-ridden bodies of two CPM supporters were found on the state highway near Garh-Salboni in Jhargram on Saturday morning.

Senior police officers believe that PCAPA members may have killed the two CPM men — Nilkanta Mahato and Thakurdas Mahtao — in retaliation to CBI’s decision of booking PCAPA chief Asit Mahato in the Jnaneswari derailment case. The victims were residents of Jitushol.

According to sources,50-year-old Thakurdas and 35-year-old Nilkanta were dragged out of their houses by a group of armed Maoist cadres around 11.30 pm yesterday.

“We recovered the bodies in the morning. Some Maoist posters were found near their bodies. The posters stated that the two agents of Patwari were punished for working as police informers,” said an officer of the Jhargram Police Station.

Patwari is the owner of a sponge iron factory in Jitushol. Sources said Nilkanta was a member of AITUC,the labour union of the CPI,while Thakurdas was a CPM supporter and the father of Utpal Mahato, who works as a driver for Patwari.

West Midnapore Superintendent of Police Manoj Verma said: “The note found near the bodies suggests the two were killed for working as police informers. But we have information that Nilkantho was an active member of the PCAPA. We are investigating into the matter.”

Meanwhile, the Maoists today abducted a woman CPM worker Chunibala Rani (45) from Bejdanga village in Sarenga, Bankura. Chunibala is a resident of Bejdanga village in Sarenga.

“In the last 24 hours, there were three incidents in the districts and all of them were the handiwork of Maoists. We are investigating into the matter,” said Vishal Garg,Superintendent of Police,Bankura.

Combing on at encounter site

The security forces on Saturday conducted fresh combing operations in Ranja forest area near Duli village where eight Maoists were killed in an encounter on Wednesday. The operation started early in the morning and it was on till the last reports came in. West Midnapore SP Manoj Verma said: “Till now the security forces have recovered three weapons including one rifle and two pistols and three landmines.” The forces have also seized a huge quantity of explosives including detonators and gelatin sticks from the area. Many uniforms were also recovered, including those of policemen, forest guards, besides olive-green uniforms of the People’s Liberation Guerrilla Army of the Maoists.
