Trinamool’s Abhishek Banerjee sets record in West Bengal, wins by margin of over 7,00,000 votes

Abhishek Banerjee broke the 20-year-old record of former CPI(M) MP Anil Basu who had won by a margin of 6,82,502 votes in 2014 Lok Sabha polls.

Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee has broken West Bengal’s record for the highest victory margin, as he is currently leading by a margin of 7,03,137 votes in the Diamond Harbour constituency.

Banerjee, who had won the 2019 Lok Sabha elections by a margin of about 3,20,594 votes, broke the 20-year-old record of former CPI(M) MP Anil Basu. In the 2004 Lok Sabha polls, Basu had won the election by a margin of 6,82,502 votes from Arambagh constituency.

Banerjee not only broke that record but also touched the 7 lakh-plus vote margin which is unprecedented in West Bengal electoral politics.

Banerjee has been a TMC MP from Diamond Harbour seat since 2014. However, over the years, Banerjee has become the number two in the Mamata Banerjee-led party.

A few days ago, Banerjee claimed that the TMC would win about 30 seats in Bengal. At present, the party is leading in 29 seats, while the BJP in 12 seats and the Congress in one.

BJP had fielded its old-timer Abhijit Das (Bobby) against Abhishek Banerjee, who had staged a sit-in outside the counting centre earlier in the day, protesting against the alleged high-handedness of the TMC counting agents.

“He will win by a margin of 10 lakh votes. TMC indulged in booth rigging during election. Today they also manipulated the counting process. He is nothing but a coward,” said the BJP candidate.
